Yields 10 bars

Equipment

  • Soap moulds

Ingredients

  • 16 ounces purified tallow
  • 7.5 ounces coconut oil
  • 7.5 ounces sweet almond oil
  • 11.8 ounces frozen whole milk cubes, or water
  • 4.5 ounces sodium hydroxide (lye)
  • 1 tablespoon activated charcoal
  • ½ tablespoon bentonite clay
  • .3 ounce peppermint essential oil
  • .2 ounce patchouli essential oil
  • .2 ounce lemongrass essential oil
  • .1 ounce anise essential oil
  • .1 ounce rosemary essential oil
  • .1 ounce spearmint essential oil

Instructions

  • Set up a double boiler on the stove.
  • Measure out the tallow and coconut oil into a large bowl and set it over the double boiler.
  • Meanwhile measure out the infused sweet almond oil in a separate bowl.
  • Measure out the lye in a small container and the milk ice cubes into a separate container. (Using ice cubes will prevent the milk from getting chunky when it heats up after reacting to the lye. That can make it difficult to tell when the lye is dissolved. Using a frozen liquid portion makes soap making happen more quickly because you don't have to wait for the lye water to cool.)
  • Slowly sprinkle the lye over the milk ice cubes while stirring gently until the lye is fully dissolved. Set the lye mixture aside to cool.
  • Combine the activated charcoal and bentonite clay in a small dish. Set aside.
  • Add the essential oil blend and charcoal mix. Blend it a little longer until fully combined.
  • Measure out the essential oil blend and set it aside. Though it's a little elaborate, this blend is nice for the guys too without being too masculine for the ladies. If you want something simpler, try a 50/50 mix of lemongrass essential oil and lavender essential oil for a total of 1 ounce of essential oils.
  • Once the hard oil have melted in the double boiler, remove the bowl from the heat and stir in the sweet almond oil.
  • When the lye mixture and oil mixture have cooled pour the lye water into the oil mixture, stirring to combine them for a minute.
  • Using an immersion blender combine the mixture until the soap reaches "trace."
  • Add the essential oil blend and charcoal mix. Blend it a little longer until fully combined.
  • Pour the mixture into the soap mold.
  • Cover and set in a cool place until the soap has hardened enough to remove from the molds, usually 48 hours.
  • Cut the soap into bars and cure for 4-8 weeks. The longer you cure the bars, the harder the final bars will be and the longer they will last.
