One of the best reasons to go camping is to make family memories. What better way than to bring along ingredients for Dutch Oven Campfire Brownies??
Yup, you can bake in the wild outdoors. Once I perfected Sourdough in a Dutch Oven, I knew I had to keep going. The kids will love mixing up brownies under the trees, nestling the pot in a bed of coals, and then adventuring while they bake. It's a bit more work as you can't ensure an exact "oven temp" here but it's well worth it!
If you're gluten-free, make up some Buckwheat Cheesecake Brownies at home. Sounds odd, but buckwheat is actually gluten-free! One of my favourite ways to use brownies is the base of an ice cream cake, too.
Key Ingredients
Flour - I like to use organic all-purpose, this isn't necessarily a recipe where I add in whole grains. Sometimes a treat is a treat!
Sugar - Granulated sugar of course makes up the majority of brownies, and organic cane is a good option.
Cocoa powder - Unsweetened cocoa give you a great flavour without extra sugar.
Butter and eggs - Adds fat and leavening and just holds things together!
How to Make Brownies in a Dutch Oven
***See recipe card below for precise measurements and instructions.***
Step 1: Fire up your coals, charcoal, whatever you have on hand. Get it going hot while you mix the brownies.
Step 2: Whisk together the dry ingredients until all one colour.
Step 3: Stir in the eggs (I love my Danish dough whisk!)...
Step 4: ...then keep stirring while adding melted butter.
Step 5: Press the batter evenly into a greased (or parchment-lined) Dutch oven.
Step 6: Bake in the coals, for 20-40 minutes, until a knife in the center is clean.
Step 7: Very carefully remove the brownie and serve!
Tips and Tricks
- Don't over mix the batter. Just get everything combined!
- Stir in your favourites such as nuts or chocolate chips, or just leave plain.
- Bring along whipped cream or fruit for the top, or even forage some edible flowers.
FAQs
It might sound like a lot of work, but really it's so much fun and worth it. Crack your eggs into a small jar. Then put all dry ingredients in a Tupperware bowl with lid and even place your whisk in there if it fits. Plop the butter in a jar as well - you can set it at the edge of the coals to melt. Boom, you have everything to take with you and bake!
I love to use whipped cream, because obviously we have enough cream and my dispenser makes it super easy. You can search for edible flowers, which are also great in a salad. Chocolate, fruit, nuts, whatever suits your fancy. Maybe even bring along some butter-free caramel!
I don't know about you, but my family tends to eat the entire batch at once since we've been out swimming, hunting, what have you. But if you have any left, just pop the lid back on and you're done! They will keep just fine the day or two you are out.

Dutch Oven Campfire Brownies
Ingredients
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- ⅔ cup all-purpose flour
- ⅔ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup melted butter
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Optional Mix-Ins:
- chopped walnuts, chocolate chips, pecans or whatever you like in your brownies (up to ¾ cup total)
Optional Toppings:
- whipped cream, chocolate shavings, fresh berries…whatever you have available
Instructions
- Get a hot fire going until you have a substantial bed of coals, or fire up 24 charcoal briquettes or a combination of both.
- In a bowl, whisk together dry ingredients (except mix-ins).
- Make a well in the middle of the dry ingredients and crack two eggs into it. Then I get my Danish dough whisk, you could use a fork or a wooden spoon, and start mixing the eggs as I pour in the melted butter. Mix the batter together until well combined. Add in your mix-ins at this point, mixing together.
- Spread evenly into a lightly greased 6 quart Dutch oven. Alternatively, add parchment paper to your Dutch oven and carefully spread in your brownie mix evenly on greased paper.
- Carefully place the Dutch oven on hot coals…about half underneath, and the remainder on lid once covered.
- Depending on how hot your coals are, it can take anywhere from 20-45 minutes to fully bake.
- Use your cast iron lid lifter and gloves and check within the first 20 minutes, until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.
- Carefully lifting out of your very hot Dutch oven, plate your brownie round.
- When you are ready to serve, whip your cream if you will be topping with whip or slice with a good knife, garnish with chocolate shavings, freshly picked berries, mint, or fresh edible flowers and enjoy!
Notes
- Pack ingredients in jars for easy combining and cooking on the go!
