Popcorn is one of the most perfect snacks. A whole grain, it will keep tummies full and happy! It's super easy to have lots of flavor while keeping dairy-free.
We love to eat popcorn! The kids know it's one of those snacks they can basically have free rein of. It's a whole grain, and if you add your favourite fat it will definitely keep them full! That's why I will even pair it with a smoothie (more fat, plus yummy fruit) and call it lunch.
Butter is our standard topping here, but we have family and friends with various dietary needs, so I started thinking about how to make the snack fit into everyone's diet. Popcorn in Ghee is a great way to get that butter flavour without the dairy. Some might be a bit wary of that still having a touch of dairy, so today I chose to go with avocado oil. And for a really fun treat, pop some extra so you can make up Marius' favourite Popcorn Cake.
Key Ingredients
Popcorn - Use your favourite corn. Color and type doesn't matter!
Avocado Oil - I love keeping a bottle of this on hand. It might seem a touch expensive, but I like to think of it as a good option we are using sparingly.
How to Make Popcorn in Avocado Oil
***See recipe card below for precise measurements and instructions.***
Step 1: Use your favourite method to pop some corn!
Step 2: Once all popped, transfer half to a giant bowl.
Step 3: Drizzle oil onto popcorn while tossing.
Step 4: Add salt and any other seasonings.
Tips and Tricks
- Use your biggest bowl for tossing, stirring, etc. I think we all have that one giant Tupperware that is used for popcorn and other things.
- Make smaller bowls with various seasonings and have a tasting party.
FAQs
Use whatever you are used to in your family. I know lots of people who pop it on the stove and others who find they only burn it and don't pop all kernels that way. An air popper is a great way, because it doesn't require fat, meaning you won't be adding any allergens. You will also likely easily find one while thrifting. I like the air popper because the kids can do it on their own.
Use a measuring cup or other vessel that allows you to get a small stream of oil going. This way you won't be dumping it all on at once. Only season half the popcorn at once so it all gets some! Turn the bowl as you go or have someone gently toss with a wooden spoon while you pour. Then add seasonings and again stir or shake before adding more of everything.
