    Recipe Round-up: Soups and Stews

Published: Nov 30, 2020 · Modified: Nov 15, 2021 by kateschat · This post may contain affiliate links · 4 Comments

November 2021 update: I am updating with a few additional recipes to spice up your winter and warm your bones- check them out!

It's soup season! Time to for some warmth and nourishment from simple-to-put-together meals so we have time to deal with all that still needs to be done (always butchering, always cheesemaking, and of course, still pregnant...) but also time to hygge myself away by the fire with a fluffy romance novel and bowl of whatever the week's soup or stew is.

I hope you enjoy this collection of recipes and be sure to let me know what you think!

    Venison for Dinner

Big Batch Big Moose Chili Recipe- This recipe works with any red meat (or ground chicken or turkey!), and makes around 2 gallons. If you're a smaller family you can go ahead and freeze some for an easy Sunday lunch, or maybe you need to double if for your holiday bonfire!

Moose Soup with Garden Vegetables- If you aren't lucky enough to have moose available try substituting with venison or beef. This recipe is worth making again and again!

    Instant Pot Hambone Pea Soup

Instant Pot Ham Bone Pea Soup- Whether you are using up your holiday ham bone, or you buy a ham especially for this recipe it you will marvel at how quickly a few simple and humble ingredients turn into a flavorful meal. The instant pot makes this such a quick process!

Sausage Lentil Soup-There's something about Sausage Lentil Soup I just love. It’s comfort in a bowl. The ingredients are so darn simple, almost as if the finished product is more than a sum of its parts.

Sunshine Soup- Sunshine Soup is a simple soup made with winter squash, lentils, and ginger for the grey days when our bodies need deep warmth, nourishing, and the promise of sunshine to come

    butternut squash soup

Crockpot Creamy Butternut Squash Soup with Sausage Crumbles- When it comes to Butternut Squash Soup, I want simple, creamy and thick. Maybe too thick for some peoples tastes (but I’ll tell you how much broth to add if you want a thinner soup…). Don't be intimidated by the preparing of butternut squash, either, I'll tell you the easiest way to cook it!

    Cookbook Recommendations

Five Marys Cookbook- So many classic recipes with “twists” and “upgrades" to make them a little fancier and go from good to AMAZING. The hamburger soup is well loved by all of us.

Moosewood Cooks for a Crowd- I love this book because all the recipes are huge. Great for those of us with many to feed: be it large families, many friends, or both! No frills, good food. Cream of broccoli soup is soooo good.

Cookbook Reviews- I recently (2021) filmed a cookbook review since that's something I love and you are always asking about. So go give that a watch, and tell me your favorite cookbook that I should check out!

    Around the Web

Families who cook- I love her for soup inspo! She had a soup e-book she was giving away and although its not available right now, definitely give her Instagram a follow to know when its available next!

Zuppa Tuscana- Literally meaning "Tuscan soup", many variations of this recipe exist, giving it a lot of wiggle room to still be tasty, and use up those wilting greens in your crisper drawer. Potatoes and Kale are aplenty in this climate!

Healthy Salmon Corn Chowder by Hummusapian

Healthy Salmon Corn Chowder- This recipe is already dairy-free, so if you left out the salmon it is easily made vegan! We're fortunate we have lots of home canned salmon and frozen salmon as its a local resource.

Slow Cooker Cream Cheese Crack Chicken Chili- A mouthful of a name, and deliciousness. It's creamy and an easy crowd-pleaser for your bonfire! If you have canned chicken on hand (or upgrade your leftover roast chicken from the fridge!) this becomes an easy throw-together meal on a busy weeknight or before a last minute guest.

    Pairings

Skillet Cornbread- This recipe is a gluten-free winner! And it has the option to be dairy-free as well.

Sourdough Biscuits- Even after you start your Overnight Sourdough Cinnamon Twists you will have discard you need to use up; this is the recipe for you!

Heavy Cream Sourdough Drop Biscuits- Hefty and perfect for sopping the last bit of broth from your bowl, these are another great was to not let your extra sourdough starter go to waste.

Soft Sourdough Master Recipe- Use this versatile recipe to make buns, Hun!

Check out my Pinterest for more meal-inspiration, and I often show you what I'm cooking over on Instagram.

Hi, I'm Kate! Thank you for joining us on this crazy journey! Our family lives on a 34 acre homestead in northern BC, Canda and get a kick out of things like raising our own meat, dairy and vegetables.

We’re a homeschooling family who believes life is the best teacher but we do hit the books in winter. I’m so glad you’re here, I hope you stick around!
