This is a kid-friendly favourite at our house! Blueberries and bananas make for a creamy, delicious smoothie any time of day.

I know, you're thinking "who needs a recipe for a smoothie?" But sometimes, when mom brain sets in you can't think of a good combo! I love having some go-to ideas for smoothies so we're ready when a child asks for one.
I also love to serve a smoothie as lunch, especially with some Avocado Oil Popcorn or Honey Whole Wheat Muffins. This gives us protein and whole grains and that's a full meal in my book!
Key Ingredients
Dairy - Feel free to use raw milk, store milk, almond milk, whatever you have.
Thick Dairy - If you're always making Dairy Kefir like we are, use that. Or use your favourite yogurt.
Fruit - I combine frozen blueberries and fresh bananas.
Sweetener - Depending on if your dairy is sweetened or if your kids like it a bit sweeter, feel free to dab in some honey or maple syrup.
How to Make Blueberry Banana Smoothies
***See recipe card below for precise measurements and instructions.***
Step 1: Peel bananas and add all ingredients to your blender.
Step 2: Blend until smooth.
What To Serve With Smoothies
We love to serve these for breakfast or snacks, and even a perfect lunch when Marius and the bigs are out hunting! Little kids often don't want to eat much and prefer to graze, so a smoothie is perfect for that.
Sourdough Banana Bread Muffins will also help you use up those bananas on the counter. You can also add blueberries to Buckwheat Muffins for a gluten-free treat. Popcorn is another favourite of ours, as then you get a whole grain!
Venison Sausage Rolls will add a filling option if you need that, or scramble up some eggs.
FAQs
We prefer ours a bit on the thinner side. It's definitely thicker than milk, but it's not what you'd think of as a rich frozen smoothie. You can definitely use frozen bananas instead, but you'll want to make sure you have frozen them in slices or smaller chunks. If using fresh, then whole bananas are just fine.
Store in a jar in the fridge. Smoothies will often separate into layers, so just give them a good shake before serving. That's why I like jars with good lids, so I can shake and go! You can also easily make popsicles, like my Mango Popsicles, but with this smoothie. Keep in mind that when freezing, the sweetness is muted, so you might want to stir in more sweetener before freezing.
Yup, no problem there! My kiddos often have dairy issues when younger, so we will use goat milk and Goat Kefir. This will make it dairy-free, but just remember that if you are looking for vegan, then skip the honey and use maple syrup.

Blueberry Banana Smoothie
Ingredients
- 3 large bananas or 4 smaller ones
- 2 cups frozen blueberries
- 2 ½ cups kefir or yoghurt
- 1 cup milk
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon honey optional for extra sweetness
Instructions
- Peel bananas and add all ingredients to your blender. Careful as it should get close to the top of your Vitamix or larger blender container.
- Starting off on the slowest speed, allow ingredients to gently mix together with lid on.
- Turn off and check fill level of smoothie. If it is a tad too full with lid on, pour some into a small cup and return lid.
- Slowly increase the speed another level or two making sure it is not too fast but enough to macerate the solid ingredients.
- After the smoothie is done, slowly take off the lid and pour into jars/cups and drink it while it's freshly blended.
Notes
- This will make 4 hearty servings or go with 6-8 for smaller tummies.
- Feel free to add protein powder or collagen for an extra boost.
- Use any type of milk and dairy here, including goat milk.
- Make sure you have a very large blender, or split the recipe in half.
